Pets are
like kids to some people, including me, so these products will ease some owners
minds while away from home and also keep the pet healthy. Pet products are
going high tech from tracking devices to a motorized, toy varmint that’s tough enough
to withstand a big dog’s chomp. One such product is a tag embedded with an accelerometer
that registers your dog’s every move and feeds you the data via a smartphone
app. This device can also track its health. Some other products the article talks
about are feeding bowls to challenge the animal to make sure they don’t eat too
fast. The article can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/12/technology/personaltech/new-devices-mind-pets-while-owners-are-away.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0.
I found in paragraph two where it talks about 2/3 of
Americans share their homes with an animal, according to the American Pet
Products Association, perhaps is shouldn’t be a surprise that pet care is going
high tech that the writer uses logos. Due to a belief that there is that many
people interested in such devices is why they should be mass produced with many
different options to fit each owner specifically.
Pathos is used in paragraph four and five. It talks about
how the owner can monitor the dogs every move throughout the day and can alert the
owner if it is stressed or suffering from some other ailment.
In paragraph 12 and 13 it says “Mrs. Wickens’s company sells
three sizes of treadmills for dogs costing $500 to $1,000. Demand, she said,
has doubled since her first model went on sale five years ago. She is the
cofounder of Petzen so due to her title she must know the best sort of device
that would work based on her expert opinion of what is the most popular. This is
an example of ethos.
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteWow. That was my first choice of words, and as a fellow writer happens, but not too often. And to allow it to happen over basically a infomercial is hilarious. We do not have animals in our home due to rent restrictions, but have had them in the past. I found this writing to pull me into your world of loving animals. The reason why I like it is, that you took a commercial about pet products and wrote it in a way that caught my attention. Nice job. I was truly pleasantly surprised.

I've noticed that while some writers may use all aspects of persuasion in the same article, there is always one they favor. In the case of your article, Pathos is used more often than the others. This is not surprising, with animals that the writer would use emotion to sway the audience. I wonder if the authors decision on what appeal method and when had anything to due what the target audience might be?
ReplyDeleteAshley, I've enjoyed catching up on your posts. I can relate to living at a distance from close friends. We lived in the DC-metro area for three-plus years, made some great friends, and then left them to return home. As for your writing process, you might try using "Track Changes" in Microsoft Word. It is similar to scribbling things out on paper. Click "Review" and then "Track Changes," and everything you do to the document will be colored. So, if you delete something, it will be shown in red and with a line through it, and you can still see it just like something you scribbled out on your paper. Just a thought. Finally, I like your explanations and examples of the rhetorical concepts we've been studying. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteAshely,
ReplyDeleteI found this article to be very interesting good choice in reading. I think a lot of people do consider their pets to be their children. Therefore I feel it is a very good idea for pet care to become more advanced and more high tech. This way these people can feel better about their animals health.
Ashley, You had me at pets. I am an avid pet owner, and have been involved with pet rescue for sometime now. I found your article very informative and appreciated your explanation of how logos, pathos, and ethos were used in it. I was actually talking recently about considering a treadmill because my border collie, a very active breed, has been exhibiting nervous tendencies from a lack of exercise. Again very nice choice on topic and look forward to reading more from you as the semester progresses.
ReplyDeleteAshley,
ReplyDeleteI was immediately hooked when you mentioned pets. I am an animal lover, so I really loved your article! Other than the fact that you happened to pick an awesome article, you also identified how the article used logos, pathos, and ethos very well. By the way, I love the pictures of the dogs! Great job!
